Live at Apollo, Manchester

Kelly Clarkson pic

Kelly Clarkson's capable of making versions of Kings Of Leon's Use Somebody and The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army her own.

After an impressive cover of The Black Keys' Lies, Kelly Clarkson admits to the crowd: "I love soulful music, but I don't always get chance to record it, because I work with a bunch of suits." Kelly possesses a set of smoky pipes that deserve to be heard with a more subtle backing than the dumb power-pop of My Life Would Suck Without You.

The high points come not when Kelly Clarkson's shouting through hits such as Since You've Been Gone, but when her backing band are sent offstage, and Kelly's powerful voice is given room to breathe on the likes of Behind These Hazel Eyes.

And she's far more suited to dazzling in the spotlight during a tender ballad than bouncing round the stage like Beth Ditto's smaller sister.

Hopefully Kelly can ditch the predictable pop-rock and release the album of soul ballads she's clearly desperate to make.

As "the suits" know, Kelly would instantly lose half her audience - but it's the only way she'll become a true American idol.
