A Special Day

Tomorrow is my beautiful grandson's 8th birthday and sadly I will not be there to share it with him.  And his wonderful mother has her birthday the following day with my one and only granddaughter (whom I have never seen in person) celebrating her first birthday the next week.

Now, as is the case with all first born children, there are hundreds of thousands of photographs of Andreas, so I have plenty to choose from to paint.

But I am ultra lucky if I get one or two of Catherine!  Maybe they'll take the hint and send me a whole bunch of the little lady so I can get to paint more than the one I already have.

This was done from a photograph taken when they were last in SA almost 2 years ago, but I liked it, so I painted it, and it is one I'm going to keep!

Sunshine Award

Every  now and then some enterprising person sends out an award to marvellous people in our blogging world.

The latest one is the Sunshine Award and what a lovely idea it is.  I have received mine from fellow South African and fabulous West Coast artist, Marie Theron.  I hope to connect with Marie after Easter when a group of us plan to take a painting trip to her wonderful part of our world.

Sketching

This past Monday I thought I would try James Parker's challenge in Watercolour!  Ha!  What a disaster.  I find that about one in five of my watercolours I'm happy with, yet I keep on trying.

So, after tearing that one up, I thought I would try it in pencil.  Only having watercolour paper with me, this is the rather 'bumpy' result.

Now I don't usually use graphite to sketch with, but this one was also done with pencil in about 10 minutes.  I had decided I'd finished the oil portrait, and did this whilst waiting.

And then finally, my favourite sketching medium, charcoal.  One of the ladies brought in this skull one Friday and it was quite a challenge to sketch.  It used to be her horse until it died.

Sebuah band/musisi tampil disebuah acara tv secara lipsing adalah hal yang biasa dan sering kita liat. Bagaimana jika Muse ketika disuruh (baca : dipaksa) tampil lipsing disebuah acara tv?? Berikut ini adalah jawabannya ketika mereka membawakan lagu Uprising secara lipsing di sebuah acara tv di Italia



Ketika pertama kali saya melihat video ini, tertawa, kebanggaan, salut, pokoknya komplet deh menjadi 1. Terlebih ketika membaca komentar2 yang ada di video tersebut. Dari keterangan blog musik Yahoo selain diceritakan bahwa penampilan tersebut sebagai bentuk pemberontakan, juga diceritakan bahwa pembawa acara "bodoh" karena tidak tahu tentang band Muse. Apakah itu hanya lelucon semata yang sengaja dibuat Muse? Ya.. itu adalah lelucon serius yang sengaja dibuat Muse dan secara tidak langsung, apa yang dilakukan Muse menurut saya adalah sebuah sindiran dan contoh bahwa bermusik itu tidak boleh diatur, apapun itu bentuknya dan ketika suatu idealisme bermusik dihadapkan dengan permintaan dan aturan yang mempunyai program dan pihak yang membayar, seperti itulah hasilnya.

Adakah musisi Indonesia ada yang berani tampil seperti Muse ketika diminta untuk tampil lipsing di sebuah acara tv?? Kayanya akan berpikir ulang berjuta2 kali. Bisa jadi ketika mereka bermain seperti itu, kedepannya mereka tidak akan dikontrak untuk tampil disemua acara musik tv tersebut alias sudah di blacklist !!
Jika sudah demikian, idealisme bermusik pun tumbang karena aturan dari mereka, yang mempunyai kuasa.

Saya pribadi jika melihat band/musisi yang tampil di acara musik di tv2 secara lipsing males nontonnya walopun band/musisi tersebut sudah punya nama

Patung Barack Obama ?? Gak Penting !!

Seperti yang kita tau, kemarin (sebelum dipindah), di Taman Menteng, Jakarta berdiri patung anak kecil. Ya.. itu adalah patung Barack Obama ketika masih kecil. Di bawah patung tersebut terdapat tulisan ;
"SI KECIL BARRY BERMAIN BERSAMA IBUNYA, ANN DI DAERAH MENTENG INI. DIA TUMBUH DEWASA MENJADI PRESIDEN AMERIKA SERIKAT KE -44 DAN PENERIMA NOBEL PERDAMAIAN. BARACK OBAMA"

Seumpama patung tersebut seterusnya berdiri di Taman Menteng dan kemudian 4 tahun lagi Barack Obama tidak terpilih (kembali) menjadi presiden Amerika, apakah patung tersebut masih akan terus berdiri?? Ataukah akan dibongkar seiring dengan lengsernya Barack Obama??

Sekarang patung tersebut akan dipindah ke SDN Menteng 01. Dan jika patung tersebut jadi berdiri di SDN Menteng 01, terlepas dari kontroversi yang ada, cerita apa yang akan muncul??

1 hari setelah patung Barack Obama berdiri di SDN Menteng 01

Seorang murid SDN Menteng 01 (sebut saja si Ireng) bertanya kepada gurunya (sebut saja si Ajah)
"Pak, siapa sih patung itu?"

"Owh.. itu bapak presiden Amerika, Barack Obama" jawab pak Ajah

"Owh.. yang sering muncul di tipi itu ya pak? Kenapa dibuat patung segala dan kenapa ditaruh disini??" tanya si ireng lagi

"Karena beliau pernah tinggal di Indonesia. Di Menteng dan sekolah di SDN kita ini nak ireng.." jawab pak Ajah

"Hah.. Gara2 pernah tinggal disini dan sekolah di SDN kita terus dibuatin patung gitu ya pak??" tanya si ireng dengan raut muka yang kaget dan tidak percaya bercampur heran

"Seumpama.. sapa tuh pak namanya tadi, ireng lupa.."

"Bapak barack Obama" kata pak Ajah

"Ya.. Barack Obama, hehehe... Seumpama si bapak Barack Obama itu sekarang menjabat sebagai presiden Irak, apa patung itu juga akan tetap dibuat dan ditaruh di SDN kita?" tanya si ireng lagi.

"Kamu itu.. Udah sana, masuk kelas. Kerjaan latihan Matematika halaman 80" Jawab pak Ajah dengan nada agak keras.

"Jah bapak.. Gimana sih. Orang ditanya juga gak dijawab. Malah di suruh ngerjain latihan. Huhh.." Gerutu si ireng sambil ngeloyor ke kelas.

20 tahun kemudian di SDN Menteng 01, dimana si Ireng kemudian menjadi guru di SDN tersebut ditanya oleh muridnya (sebut saja si Blogcenti) dan Barack Obama sudah tidak lagi menjabat sebagai presiden Amerika.

"Pak Ireng, siapa sih patung itu? Dari saya belum sekolah mpe sekarang patung itu ada." Tanya si Blogcenti.

"Owh..patung itu. Itu Mantan presiden Amerika yang ke -44, Barack Obama" jawab pak Ireng.

"Kenapa patung itu masih ada disini? Apalagi sudah MANTAN." Tanya si Blogcenti.

(mengutip dari jawaban gurunya dulu, pak Ajah, si Ireng menjawab,
"Karena beliau pernah tinggal di Indonesia. Di Menteng dan sekolah di SDN kita ini nak Blogcenti" jawab pak Ireng

"Hah..?? Alesan yang lucu dan mengada2 pak. Hanya karena dia dulu pernah tinggal dan sekolah di Indonesia, kemudian dibuatin patung?? Kalo dia dulu menjabat presiden Palestina, apakah juga akan dibuatin patung juga??" Tanya si Blogcenti dengan nada heran mendengar jawaban pak Ireng.

"Udah sann..."

Belum sempet selesai omongan pak Ireng, si Blogcenti langsung memotongnya.
"Kenapa yang dibuat dia? Apa visi dari pembangunan monumen Barack Obama ketika itu? Apa sih kontribusi Barack Obama buat negara kita setelah bertahun2 patung dia berdiri megah di SD kita? Kenapa gak patung para pahlawan saja yang jelas2 telah berkorban dan berjuang untuk kemerdekaan negara Indonesia? Siapa sih yang mendanai pembuatan patung itu? Jika orang Indonesia yang mendanainya, kenapa mereka lebih memilih mendanai pembuatan patung Barack Obama daripada membuat patung para pahlawan kita? Kenapa mereka lebih menghargai dan menghormati Barack Obama dengan patung itu daripada menghargai dan menghormati para pahlawan kita? Huhh.. gak penting banget sih.. Lebay deh orang2 itu atau malah allay banget sih." Cerocos si Blogcenti sambil pergi menginggalkan pak Ireng yang bengong dengan telunjuk yang masih mengarah ke salah satu kelas.

In the suburb of Hout Bay there is an 'informal settlement' that goes by the name of Imizamo Yethu, which roughly translated means 'through collective struggle'.  The settlement is made up of shacks and the residents are primarily Xhosa speakers from the Eastern Cape who have made the trip to Cape Town looking for a job and a better life.  There are also immigrants (legal and illegal) from northern parts of Africa.

Imizamo Yethu is a hodge-podge of people and cultures and despite desperate hardship there are also little gems that can be unearthed.

Lion the Dog is one of them.  

He used to live on the dusty street even though his owner made sure he had fresh water and a meal of some sort.

But Lion the Dog was getting old and his joints were feeling stiff and sore, so Hilary Barclay*, a former nurse and animal lover, decided that he needed a kennel.  Through generous donations, Lion now has shelter and warmth and loves his kennel so much, he "only comes out of it to eat, pee and pooh!"

*Hilary Barclay, a registered nurse and dog trainer, started an animal sterlisation programme in Hout Bay's IY township in 2004 to uplift the animal welfare of pets in this community.  To date they have sterlised over 1000 pets and have thus gone a long way to curbing the animal population.  The original black and white photograph for this pic was taken by Mia Davila who is the publicity and liaison person at DARG.

Kebutuhan Hidup atau Kebutuhan Seks ??

Kedua lirik tersebut adalah cuplikan lirik dari lagu Kupu-Kupu Malam - Titik Puspa dan Doa Pengobral Dosa - Iwan Fals.

Kedua lagu tersebut tercipta untuk mereka, para wanita yang pekerjaannya sebagai penjaja seks. Melihat lirik dari kedua lagu tersebut dan lagu tersebut adalah lagu lama, bisa jadi mereka (baca : wanita penjaja seks) pada jaman itu "bener2 murni dan "terpaksa" melakukan pekerjaan itu demi mencukupi kebutuhan hidupnya (dan keluarganya) seperti pada bagian lirik yang saya tebalin.

Masihkan untuk jaman sekarang mereka terpaksa melakukan perkejaan itu untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya (dan keluarganya) ??

Banyak alasan yang membuat mereka menjadi seperti itu apalagi dijaman sekarang dengan segala kompleksitas hidup dan tuntutan hidup. Tidak hanya sebatas sebagai memenuhi hidup saja tetapi bisa lebih dari itu.

Bergaya hidup mewah : Cara yang cepat untuk menghasilkan uang banyak untuk memenuhi gaya hidup yang pengen tampil mewah dan luxury
Tantangan : Sebuah pengalaman dan tantangan bercinta atau ngeseks dengan beda-beda orang.
Nafsu yang tinggi : Nafsu seks yang tinggi bisa juga dijadikan alesan karena si pasangan (pacara atau suami) tidak bisa memenuhinya atau kurang terpenuhi.
Hobi : hobi ngeseks juga bisa dijadikan alesan. dll

Apakah semua itu mempunyai harga?? Saya kira gak. Kadang dikarenakan alesan tertentu, seperti nafsu yang tinggi dan hobi, bisa dilakukan tanpa perlu dibayar. Yang penting kebutuhan seks terpenuhi.

Kelas merekapun berbeda2. Ada yang kelas pinggiran jalan, kelas mall sampai kelas hotel berbintang. Ada yang tarifnya mulai dari sebatas puluhan ribu sampai ke tarif yang mencapai ratusan ribu bahkan jutaan. Belum termasuk bonus.

Usia dan tingkat pendidikanpun tidak ada aturan (ya iyalah..) Ada yang masih belasan tahun sampai yang sudah punya cucu. Masih sekolah SMP ataupun sudah tingkat kuliah (ayam kampus..??).
