REMEMBERING MOONDOG

In the early 50's my family and I would spend summer vacations in East Orange, NJ. I finally convinced my parents, when I was about 12, to let me go into New York City on my own. So I would take about $5, get on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western train at East Orange station and head on into the city. Sometimes I'd ride all the way to Hoboken and cross the Hudson River on the ferry, and other times I'd get off at Newark, walk about a mile to the Pennsylvania Railroad station and go into the city by train. One of my fondest memories of my exploration of the world's largest city was Moondog. He stood out in any crowd.  He was around for years and years, and unbeknownst to me, and probably most tourists, he was an accomplished composer. Google or YouTube "Moondog" to learn more.
